Rich Dad Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money - That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!

In an interview with a young reporter aspiring to be a best-selling author, Robert Kiyosaki advised her to learn how to sell. She was disgusted by the idea of being a salesperson because she was professionally trained. The world is filled with intelligent, talented, educated, and gifted people. Without the financial intelligence of accounting, investing, marketing, and law, the only skill people know is to work hard when it comes to money. Stop looking for a high-paying job instead of working to obtain financial intelligence. In school and in the workplace, the popular opinion is in order to make more money or get promoted, you need to specialize, Which is why medical doctors continue into a specialty such as orthopedics or pediatrics. The same is true for accountants, architects, lawyers, pilots, and others. Rich dad encouraged Robert Kiyosaki to do exactly the opposite and know a little about a lot. Rich dad had Robert and Mike work in every aspect of his empire learning what was important and picking up the jargon. Later in life by quitting a high-paying job and joining the Army, Robert would learn about the most challenging part of running a company; managing people and leadership. After the war Robert took a job a the Xerox Corp for one reason, to learn how to sell. Robert's first company, with a nylon-and-velcro wallet product, was where he learned how to put a company together.

Most people work just hard enough not to be fired, and owners pay just enough so that workers won't quit. The net result is that most workers never get ahead. You do what you've been taught to do: focused on working for pay and short-term benefits. Instead, you should seek work for what you will learn, regardless of what you will earn. Start looking at your future instead of your next paycheck. Robert Kiyosaki actually recommends joining a network marketing, or multilevel marketing, company for a second job. They usually have excellent training programs that will help you overcome your fear of failure and rejection, and gain sales skills. If you are like most people with a second job, it serves only to give 50 percent of what you earn to the government and still does not generate enough money. The reason you may be a talented person but are poor is that you focus on building a better product and know little to nothing about business systems. The more you specialize the more you trap yourself to be dependent on that specialty. A displaced senior pilot, with 100,000 hours of heavy airline transport time, earning $150,00 a year would have a hard time finding an equivalent high-paying job in any other industry. The same is true for many other specialists. The rich often groom their children to take over the family business by having them work in and learn all the aspects of the business.

The base skill of personal success is the ability to sell and communicate. On top of the base skill, continue learning a little about a lot. Finally add the necessary management skills in cash flow, systems, and people. This is the perfect combination that can earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year or more. The skills of selling and marketing may be difficult for you, primarily due to your fear of rejection. However, the better you are at communicating, negotiating, and handling your fear of rejection, the easier life is.

To be truly rich, you need to be able to give as well as receive. If you are saying "Once I make some extra money, I'll give it" chances are high that you never will. especially since there is never any extra money. Instead you should focus on the most important law of money: Give, and you shall receive. Giving money is the secret to most great wealthy families. The more you give, the more you receive.

As an entrepreneur, you have already realized why you need to learn how to sell and communicate. However, if you have a start-up or small business you may have fallen into the trap of specialization. You may have fallen in love with your product so much that you could miss vital signs about the health of your business. I'm sure you have heard stories of someone stealing a business from someone. Chances are high that they did not know enough to pay attention to every aspect of the business. Sure you can hire an accountant but if you can't understand what language the accountant is speaking then you can be taken advantage of. The same goes for lawyers, salespeople, business partners, and investors. In order to build and keep an empire, you must understand the basics of every single aspect of it. I know it may sound like a lot of work but it's the difference between lasting success and unexpected failure.

Don't fall for this easy trap. Look for the skills you need to improve your wealth regardless of how much you would get paid for it. Yes, I know you have bills and responsibilities and I don't think Robert Kiyosaki is telling us to abandon them. However, your second job needs to be to invest in yourself. Education and skills are all that you need to gain the wealth you seek and you can continue that journey today.
